Chamber Welcomes Sanctuary Seconds

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Sanctuary Seconds to the Chamber. They have been in our community at various locations for the last 8 years. In September, they moved to their new location at 521 Church Street and are expanding in the near future. Their new location offers a fun, pleasant and affordable shopping for their customers.

Sanctuary Seconds is a 100% volunteer powered Thrift Shoppe. They are a 501c3 non-profit which means they offer tax deductible donations of funds and clean saleable goods. They appreciate your patronage and are always looking for more volunteers. Volunteers ensure the continuation of this mission of compassionate caring for our fellow beings.

Lifetime Friends is an animal sanctuary for stray, abused, and abandoned animals but primarily cats. Michael Sowders cares for over 150 cats at his 4-acre, cyclone fenced, multi-house compound. Adoptions to new loving homes are welcomed and greatly cherished.

Chamber Welcomes TransEco Services

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes TransEco Services to the Chamber. Stacey Stovall started TransEco Services, Inc. in June 2011. She is currently working with both the Kalispel Tribe and the Kootenai Tribe to protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat. No stranger to creating policies and strategies that benefit natural resources, Stacey hopes to begin helping organizations and small businesses with creating sustainability strategies.

Stacey’s interest in sustainable development began 30 years ago when she spent her summers and student loans traveling the world. In 1985, she joined the Peace Corps and accepted a post as a fisheries volunteer in Costa Rica. She managed a fish production facility and taught farmers to grow fish (tilapia). Secondary projects included building stoves in schools and working with her community to secure its first bus service. She loved the work so much that she served an additional term, returning to Idaho in 1989.

She taught English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, and technical writing classes at Boise State University before landing a job with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game as a Research Wildlife Biologist. She found her niche as a Wildlife Mitigation Biologist working in natural resources policy and land conservation, mitigating the loss of wildlife habitat caused by the construction of private and federal hydropower projects. Stacey also served as the Wildlife Project Manager for the Kalispel Tribe for several years.

“I love talking with landowners who have a strong connection and love for the land,” said Stacey. “It reminds me so much of my Peace Corps work. My love for conservation has grown and evolved to the point where now I believe that it’s not enough. It’s time to apply conservation and restoration strategies to the built environment if we are to have any hope of our grandchildren enjoying the natural environment as we know it. The way to get there is with the innovation and entrepreneurship of the business sector.”

Companies can take steps toward becoming more sustainable by becoming more eco-efficient, re-positioning products and services, gaining competitive advantage, and investing in natural and human capital. “The return on investment is pretty astounding for those companies that implement a sustainability plan,” Stacey explained.

“I’m anxious to start working with small businesses. I think it’s important for businesses to figure out what it means to be sustainable and help them design a strategy for how to get there. This is not just about recycling or turning the lights off when you leave the room. This is about discovering what your business needs to be healthy over the long run, clarifying the business case for pursuing sustainability, and tailoring a planning process to meet your needs. Sustainability assessments can be part of the larger planning process to help companies track their progress.”

Chamber Recognizes Northwest Autobody and Towing as January’s Business of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Northwest Autobody and Towing as the January’s Business of the Month. Established in 1978, they are a family owned and operated business. At the age of 26, Mel Donenfeld opened Northwest Autobody on a premise of providing top quality work and customer service on all vehicles, as well as 24-hour towing in North Idaho.

Northwest Autobody's close proximity to the high school enables them to assist in the high school's driver’s education course. They also participate in the Sandpoint High School's job placement program giving opportunities for local students to learn about the business and the industry. Vinny, the lead in the towing department, started over 20 years ago through the same high school program.

Northwest Autobody also recently participated in Relay For Life of Northern Idaho in memory of Hope Woodby. Eric Eugene Donenfeld is a local Rotarian and has truly enjoyed hands-on community service projects.

Chamber Welcomes Ron Wisman- Hard Times Can Present Opportunity

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Ron Wisman. He asks, “How’s business?” He’s asked many businesspersons and individuals this question recently. Most all shook their heads and said; “you shouldn’t ask such a thing of a person right now.”

“Times are getting tougher,” Wisman explains. “Still, I’m inclined to look for silver linings in the storm clouds.”

Ron Wisman, a local business consultant and counselor, has some unique thoughts on the economy and he’d like to share them with you.

“The economy is used to justify failure. It gives people an out a lot of times. The whole fact is there’s just as much money made on a down market as an up market. Other avenues of opportunity do open up but fear comes in and people are afraid to use the new thinking required. Look at it this way, just about everyone qualifies as a businessperson. Your personal finances are a business, too.”

Wisman has degrees in Business Administration, Finance and Accounting. He has studied at six different universities, been licensed with the Midwest Stock Exchange, National Association of Security Dealers and others. He’s been involved in almost every level and every facet of business from General Motors to owning his own furniture store in Phoenix, plus as a public accountant.

As a Sandpoint Business Consultant, located in the “Old Power House” building. Wisman offers complete counseling on money problems, debt, risks, success, failure, and also new ventures. Wisman was a Sandpoint resident for many years up until 2005 when he decided to travel by RV around the West Coast, down to Phoenix, and then all the way out to Wisconsin visiting family. After spending last winter ice fishing, he felt he should not have left Sandpoint so he migrated back. His greatest sense of accomplishment is working with large and complex problems; he loves a challenge.

“When the economy tanks, like it is now, the fears that creep in can be devastating. It paralyzes sound judgments. We start making emotional decisions. People have the fears of a lost or losing job, house, car, etc. What we need to realize is the positive side. The painful experiences can get you pushed into a new venture. It can be a positive thing.”

“It seems, “we all have a life’s plan. If we don’t move with it, then we get pushed.” Worthiness is a self-image. If you put yourself there, that’s where you are. We set our own limitations by our thinking and perhaps will not have to “pull up short” or those ideas we thought were impossible.”

“Many of my clients experience limited capital for event he basics. Most everyone, when tested, could make a sacrifice. I call this “seed money” for a new life’s adventure in the business world.”

“We’ve painted a picture of the businessman that he or she has all their stuff together. The appearance is that he’s very successful and making money. When he’s put on that pedestal, he’s isolated. He needs counseling more than any other.”

“Why people get into trouble is because they’re tuning into their feelings instead of their intuition. Feelings are tied into the emotional structure that runs hot and cold, day and night. Intuition is tied into the individuals own life plan. Hunches can be valuable when they come from the right source. “

“I’m not sure what value the intellect has in business. Business is a relationship. We all have an outstanding gift for some specialized activity, it’s in there somewhere.”

Chamber Welcomes Sandpoint Dental Cosmetics

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Sandpoint Dental Cosmetics (SDC) Family Dentistry to the Chamber. Dr. Joe Johnson has taken over a more than 30 year old business that was founded by Dr. Osmunson and carried on by Dr. Tom Helvey. After Dr. Helvey decided to go back to school, Dr. Johnson realized a dream could come true.

After joining the US Army at 17 years of age, making the ranks of Special Forces Training and serving as a Special Forces Medic, Dr. Johnson was wounded in combat and released to attend college. His tours took him to Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti. He then attended BYU-Idaho for his undergrad, UNC-Chapel Hill for a Masters in Public Health, Still University of Health Sciences for his Doctorates of Dental Medicine (DMD) and the Uniform Service’s University for Forensic Odontology.

Dr. Johnson practices under the same motto as his alma mater “Mind, Body, and Spirit.” This is a Holistic Medicine approach which means the patient cannot be healthy until the mind, body, and spirit are healthy and in harmony. Adopted by Still University of Health and Sciences in 1888 by the creator of Osteopathic Medicine and it is the first and only dental school in the nation to teach this approach.

Chamber Welcomes Home Depot

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Home Depot, Ponderay branch, to the Chamber. After opening its doors on January 20th, 2005, they have filled a 103,000 square foot building with more than 35,000 different types of items and they open all but two days a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Like many local businesses, they see a surge of business after the 4th of July that runs up until Labor Day.

On average, Ponderay Home Depot employs 100 associates, half of which are part time employees. Also, half of their employees have been with the company for 3 years or longer. With customers commuting from Montana, Washington, and Canada they service approximately 7,500 customers a week.

Home Depot promotes career growth. Every manager began as a regular associate and through hard work developed into middle management, department supervisor, and then into management. Even at the top, each manager proudly wears the Orange Home Depot Apron and walks the sales floor several times a day working with associates and serving customers.

There are seven core values of Home Depot and the two held closely to their hearts are Building Relationships and Giving Back to Our Communities. Chamber Recognizes Chris Thompson as November’s Volunteer of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce honors Chris Thompson as Volunteer of the Month for November. Chris has been actively involved in several local nonprofit organizations since he’ retired’ and moved back home to Sandpoint. As a long time ski instructor and coach he sits on the board of the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School program, assists Kinderhaven to put on their Festival of Trees, is instrumental in the success of Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC) Arts and Crafts Fair and Performance Series, and is an active volunteer for the Chamber, throughout the year.

Chris is a positive attribute in all that he does. He assists in setting up (and taking down) the beer garden for the Summer Sampler and is in charge of course logistics for the Chamber’s successful Scenic Half Marathon; every year he puts in hours and miles insuring the distance is accurate and the trail itself is clean, safe and well maintained. In addition, he directs the set-up of tents in the finish area and the signage on the course itself. The really amazing thing about his efforts on behalf of the race, he leaves elk camp for 2 days to help during race weekend, now that is dedication!

Kim Queen, POAC Executive Director, says that, “Chris Thompson has been the go-to guy for POAC, for more years and more events than we can even count. Every year, he handles the logistics of POAC’s annual fundraiser, the Arts & Crafts Fair. For almost every show we host at the Panida, he is there to help with load in, operates spotlights, assists as stagehand or anything else needed to be sure our performances go off without a hitch – and then helps with load out when it’s over. We trust him completely in whatever role he takes on – he will be there, on time and with a plan of action in place – his attention to detail and leadership is evident in all he does. No job is too big or too small for Chris – and we cannot thank him enough!”

“He is one of those people that are always behind the scenes, a stealth volunteer, and everything always seems to get done when he is around,” said Chamber’s Executive Director, Kate McAlister. She added, “We really appreciate his efforts and the difference he makes in our organization.”

Chamber Honors Kinderhaven

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes Kinderhaven as November’s Business of the Month. Established 1996, Kinderhaven is an emergency shelter and group foster home that has helped over 1400 children. It is the only facility of its kind in North Idaho, a non-profit that is run by a volunteer Board of Directors and is open 24 hours a day every day of the year.

Currently, there are 15 children in Kinderhaven’s care. Their license is for 16 children so they are close to the max. Children stay as long as they need and some have been there up to 18 months. They care for children ranging in age from birth to 18 years.

With $18,000-$20,000 in monthly operating costs and 86% of it coming from our community, it is a true community non-profit. The state provides between $9-$14/day depending on the age of the child. “We obviously couldn’t help the children we do without the community’s support,” said Phyllis Horvath, Executive Director of Kinderhaven.

Kinderhaven’s Festival of Trees is one of community’s more prominent events during the holiday season, and it is right around the corner.
December 1st, Family Night, is the first event from 4-6:30pm with Santa on hand and is free to the public. December 2nd is the Holiday Luncheon at 11am. The luncheon includes a silent auction, lunch, and viewing of the trees but it is already SOLD OUT. December 3rd is The Progressive Gala at 5:30pm. This is the largest event and is a two-part evening. First is a silent auction with hors d’oeuvres and a no host bar. The remainder of the evening will be a wonderful dinner catered by Ivano’s and a live auction of the fabulous trees. Tickets are $70 or a table sponsorship is $1000 and includes 8 seats.

All proceeds of Kinderhaven’s Festival of Trees go to Kinderhaven. “Your involvement truly makes a difference in the lives of the children who come to us,” said Horvath. The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Disaster Masters to the community. With over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry, the Gavin’s established Disaster Masters, LLC in April of 2011. “Let the Masters take care of your Disasters,” is their slogan and they are ready to respond to any emergency 24 hours a day.

Disaster Masters is certified to do mold remediation, water mitigation and smoke & fire restoration through The Clean Trust, formerly the IICRC. “We are always continuing our education to ensure that all standards are being met,” owner, Sean Gavin explained. “We respond 24 hours a day to home emergencies requiring immediate attention. Basement floods, broken pipes, septic floods, tree limbs falling on homes, collapsed roofs due to snow weight, fires, and we’ve even responded to cars driving into buildings, and vandalism.”

What else do they do? Well, they deal directly with your insurance agency to ensure your claim gets taken seriously. They offer air quality tests to determine if there is unseen mold in your home. Plus, they use environmentally friendly “green” and effective cleaning agents for all of their projects.

Not only that, but Disaster Masters offers incentives for referrals and repeat customers. Currently, they offer free board ups when responding to fire situations. “We try to take the stress out of your home disasters,” said Jamie Gavin. “We really do care about getting your home back into working order as quickly as we can.” They even accept major credit cards for deductibles or repairs.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes My Legacy Videos to the community. Mike and Alicia Strain have started this personalized video service to help others celebrate their life story. Honor history with a unique and cutting edge way to document your family history or life memories in a creative, heartfelt, and everlasting video that can be shared with generations to come.

Each video and package is customizable to fit any budget or need. There are a variety of memorabilia that you can include in your movie like photos, slides, home movies, interviews of family and friends, and complimentary music. Storytelling is very powerful and these videos offer an opportunity to never lose one ever again.

Being able to see someone tell a story is more meaningful than flipping through a scrapbook or photo album. My Legacy Video will come to your home or find an environment that is comfortable for the interviewees. A home setting may spur many other memories and allow the interviewee the opportunity to be in their element.

To kick off their company, the Strain’s have taken on a very honorable cause; Life After Service: North Idaho Veterans. This project has two purposes. First, it is to help Veterans understand the resources they have available to them in our small community. Secondly, they hope to inform the general public about our local Veterans, how they can support Veterans, and how Veterans give back to the community. The overall goal is to carryout this project in other communities throughout the northwest.

SANDPOINT- The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Rotary Club of Sandpoint.

“The Rotary Club of Sandpoint is proud to join the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses,” said Rotarian PR spokesman, Matt Kerr. Kerr then explained that, “the Rotary Club has been a part of Sandpoint since 1966 and has been a great supporter of our community over the years. Sandpoint’s Rotary Club is 70+ strong and part of the larger Rotary International organization, with 1.22 million members in 33,976 clubs in over 200 countries.”

Among the many local projects they’ve completed are playgrounds at Travers park, the patio at the library, stairs from Bridge St to the board walk, outdoor bathrooms at Farmin Stidwell, the Clock Tower at Farmin Park, assisted with funding for bathrooms at Jeff Jones Square, assisted with patio installation at The Daybreak Center, and a picnic shelter at Memorial Field. They also take pride in their scholarship program, sponsoring local students for over 20 years; this year they gave just over $17,000.

Their newest fund raiser, The Great Sandpoint Flatwater Regatta, is growing in attendance and popularity and should provide our community with even more in scholarship money in the coming years. Combined with our new 501 (c) 3 Charitable Trust, Facebook pages, Twitter feeds and website, Sandpoint Rotary is positioned to serve the citizens of Sandpoint and the Greater Sandpoint area for another 50 years and more.

Chamber Recognizes Connie Taylor as September’s Volunteer of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce honors Connie Taylor as September’s Volunteer of the Month. Taylor is involved with the Panhandle Animal Shelter, Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC), and Elks club. Her dive-in and get your hands dirty attitude shines with all of the activities she’s willing to help with.

“I love Connie because she gets excited about new ideas and will jump on board with both feet,” said Mandy Evans at the General Membership Luncheon on Thursday, September 8. “She rarely says ‘No,’” Evans later expelled.

Kim Queen of POAC also had very nice things to say about Taylor. “You can always count on that genuine smile and the reassurance that she will do what’s right for the longevity of the agency, and we will continue to serve our community to the very best of our abilities,” she explained.

Chamber Recognizes Lake Pend Oreille Cruises as September’s Business of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce has honored Lake Pend Oreille Cruises as September’s Business of the Month. Lake Pend Oreille Cruises has one ship, the Shawnodese and has graced our lake since 1995. They are a very active member in our community and serve hundreds of people a week during their work seasons.

The Shawnodese was designed and built by Captain Curtis Pearson. He and his wife, Linda Mitchell, the First Mate, have been offering public cruises and private charters in the Spring, Summer, and Fall since 1995. Lake Pend Oreille Cruises offers a myriad of cruises, including history, dinner, sunset, eagle watching, river cruises, island tours, and the popular Clark Fork Delta cruise. Their summer cruises depart from Sandpoint City Beach, but Fall Cruise season out of Kramer Marina in Hope is now going on until late October.

Captain Curtis is retired now, although he still has a hand in the maintenance of the boat and as a relief captain. Captains Ron Nova and Dale Hopkins are now at the helm, but Linda continues to work as First Mate. Linda says, “It is great to be out on the lake every day and meet such wonderful people and cruise on such a spectacular lake…life is good!”

Chamber Welcomes Busy Beaver Graphics & Promotions

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Busy Beaver Graphics & Promotions. Brett and Joy Batchelor moved to Sandpoint earlier this year and opened shop in June. Both are formally educated in graphic arts and met 10 years ago at The Olympian Newspaper in Olympia Washington.

Before moving to Sandpoint, Brett & wife Joy drove long haul for Gordon Trucking. They did this together in order to get out of debt. In the last 4 1/2 years, they logged over 1 million miles. “We have always wanted to move to Sandpoint. It brings us closer to our family and nature,” said Brett.

Joy attended Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming, where she earned her degree in graphic design and graphic arts. She worked in the newspaper industry for over eight years, starting as an ad designer and working her way up. Her years working at the newspaper provides her customers an excellent experience in design, writing, and project management. As president of Busy Beaver Graphics & Promotions LLC, Joy Batchelor has a special talent for public relations that stems from her extensive background in communications and her genuine interest in her clients. Plus, she loves her job. Having worked in client and customer support and as a graphic designer, Joy brings a well-rounded perspective to the project management role. Ribbon Cutting at Laughing Dog Brewing’s New Brewery

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce Laughing Dog Brewing’s Ribbon Cutting at their new location. On the eve of the arrival of six new tanks, and the ever growing brewery that was started for fun for both owners Fred Colby and Michelle Douglass, Laughing Dog Brewing celebrated their new home at 1109 Fontaine Rd in Ponderay. Their new facility is equipped with a new and improved brewery and a tap room that can house hundreds of beer lovers.

The fun keeps growing for Fred and Michelle and so does production. The six new tanks include five 30 barrel (BBL) fermenters and one 30 BBL brite beer tank. This will take Laughing Dog Brewing’s production up to 750 BBLs a month. In their first year, they produced roughly 1,000 BBL of beer and next year. With four even larger tanks on the way, 60 BBL, they will be brewing 1,000 BBLs a month by the first of next year.

Laughing Dog Brewing’s success has seen them expand their reach to 30 states so far. They are Idaho’s first brewery that is legally able to export internationally and recently entered the Canadian market. With their growth, they have projected that in three years time they will no longer be in the “Microbrewery” category and will be categorized as a “Regional brewery” with over 15,000 BBLs being produced a year.

Chamber Welcomes Sandpoint United Methodist Church

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Sandpoint United Methodist Church. The Methodist Church is Sandpoint’s first church and was first established in 1897. The Sandpoint United Methodist Church was reborn on June 12, 2011 with a new purpose.

Their new mission is to “make disciples of Jesus Christ, for the transformation of the world.” Their purpose is to feed and lead, and they do it through connection, growth, service, and sharing. Disciples of the Sandpoint United Methodist Church are connecting with God and one another, growing as disciples of Jesus Christ, serving God and one another, and sharing their faith.

The churches rebirth has brought on more singing, scripture and preaching and less reading. A typical PowerPoint presentation through a projector has been replaced by a new 64” high definition plasma screen. The addition of a Tuesday morning Bible study, and children’s involvement in worship round out the changes that have taken place at the church however, their signature Ministries of Circles on Tuesday nights and Community Meal on Thursday nights continue with a renewed focus on service.

This summer they have been “Majoring in the Minors” by taking a closer look at the 12 so-called Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. Sandpoint United Methodist Church is holding their annual “Back to School Neighborhood Barbecue” on September 8th, in replace of the Community Meal. This Halloween, Monday, October 31st, they are hosting a “Trunk or Treat,” which is a chance for the kids of Sandpoint to have a safe and fun filled Halloween experience in the safety of the church parking lot.

Chamber honors Panhandle Alliance for Education as July's Business of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes Panhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE) as the Business of the Month for their contributions to our community in education. PAFE was formed in 2002 by a small group of citizens concerned about their public schools and is modeled after local education foundations created over the last 15 years in thousands of communities across the United States. A common goal is to support public schools in our communities by raising money to enhance taxpayer-financed programs. A common focus is on quality education that raises achievement levels of all students.

Idaho now ranks fiftieth of the fifty states in per capita spending for public education. Chamber honors Laurel Taylor as July's Volunteer of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce honors Laurel Taylor as the Volunteer of the Month for her service to our community. Laurel has been a Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC) board member for more years than she probably wants to remember. She is currently serving as Secretary, which means she has held virtually every executive position; but most notably she has served several terms as President. Taylor has stepped up to take charge during some challenging times the organization has faced, often when no one else had the courage to do so and has guided the organization as it has grown and expanded the visual and performing arts events that POAC is known for.

“Laurel’s humor, strength of character and eternally positive attitude as well her ability to create a ‘we are a team’ mind set has been instrumental to the ongoing success and positive reputation that POAC has in this community and the broader Arts world. Over the years, Laurel has quietly contributed her time and energy to many organizations in our community. Most notably the Pend Orielle Arts Council. Laurel is also an active member of the Women of Wisdom Organization, helps with Kinderhaven’s Festival of Trees (as well as donates items and purchases trees) and was one of the first to volunteer for the Chamber’s Scenic Half Marathon event when it began 3 years ago and has continued to be there each year to do what ever is needed. Even during last year’s monsoon! She does a great deal to make this a better community.”

Chamber Welcomes Sweet Magnolia Bed & Breakfast

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Sweet Magnolia Bed and Breakfast to the community. Sitting on the corner of North 4th Avenue and Alder Street, the old grand house, formerly known as the Coit House, is 104 years old. Calvin and Jill Ogle recently purchased the home and opened for business on July 1, 2011. The business had been closed for 2 years.

Calvin got his Innkeeper's roots early, in a small family motel business in the resort town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He worked for his aunt during the summers in his younger years and eventually managed the summer seasons.

Jill has always dreamed of living in an old house! The rest is history:

They met while in college at Clemson University and were married in 1984. They spent the first 20 years of their marriage in the Atlanta, GA area raising their 3 children Emily, Eddie, and Madelynn. Then in 2003, after a family vacation in 2002 to the beautiful Northwest, they decided to change things up and make the move to Sandpoint, Idaho. Some called it a midlife crisis...but they did it as a family! After turning 50 and too many years as a traveling sales engineer, Calvin recently turned it all in to become the full time Innkeeper of the Sweet Magnolia. Jill works part-time as a Medical Technologist at Bonner General Hospital (just next door to the Sweet Magnolia) and part-time as the Innkeeper's helper.

In addition to lodging, the Sweet Magnolia offers a beautiful venue for catered holiday parties, wedding or baby showers, tea parties, and receptions.

The Sweet Magnolia boasts "Southern Hospitality in the Heart of Sandpoint" as their motto. The porch is always open to the community for a shady rest along the way, and the Ogles are happy to give tours to passersby.

Chamber Welcomes Bonner County Gardeners Association

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is happy to welcome the Bonner County Gardeners Association (BCGA) to the community. Formerly known as the Bonner County Master Gardeners, the BCGA is a non-profit organization, specializing in providing home horticulture education to the citizens of Bonner County. Education is available through many outlets. The members have a natural love for gardening and want to assist others with their gardening questions in northern Idaho.

The BCGA’s programs include a home horticulture workshop series, informational booths at various events, gardening presentations as requested by community groups, the Garden Tour, school gardens, internal education and beautification projects. Currently, the BCGA has taken on a major beautification project at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds is a multi-use venue with many visitors throughout the year. This is a large project demanding a high level of resources.

The BCGA look for members who desire not only to further their own knowledge of home horticulture, but also to share that knowledge with others. Their goals are to promote continuing education and a spirit of good fellowship among our members and the community. If you are interested in contributing to this effort please contact the association for more information.

Sandpoint, Idaho - Most Beautiful Small Town in the USA

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce that Sandpoint, Idaho has been named the Most Beautiful Small Town in the USA by Rand McNally and USA Today. This honor comes to Sandpoint after weeks of travel by a lucky couple, Dan and JoAnne Schaub, who won the chance to go on the Best of the Road Rally. Last week they arrived in Los Angeles for the finale and celebration of the rally and on Thursday, July 21, the winning towns were announced at the Destination Marketing Association International’s Annual Convention being held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

There, the Shaub’s displayed their “traveler’s journal” to a group of judges and discussed each town’s individual beauty. It is tough to say how much the Schaub’s influenced the judges but, based on the tears that were exchanged on their departure of Sandpoint, it is easy to believe they were in Sandpoint’s corner. However, it was up to the judges and the competition was stiff with Baker City, Oregon, Coral Gables, Florida, Franklin, Tennessee, Marcos Island, Florida, and Pacifica, California all being contenders for the title.

Sandpoint was by far the smallest of the towns in the Most Beautiful category. What won the judges over? It could have been the serene landscape, the genuine small town feel, or the population of typical Americans living a dream life they have all chosen with humility. That is certainly what wins over every person who travels through, stops and strikes up a conversation with a local.

Citizens of Sandpoint embrace life with a large passion for the outdoors, a slow pace, and a friendly neighbor feel. It was not solely Sandpoint’s beauty that won the award because the town offers so much more than what is on the surface. Once you visit Sandpoint, you will fall in love with it. The best part about the Schaub’s visit is you can have the exact same experience as the Schaub’s. Sandpoint is a real small town, with genuine people who love living here, enjoying every day to the fullest. Art fills the shops, music floods the air, and bikes swamp the roads. The Chamber welcomes Mack Deibel as our new Communications Specialist

Officially starting July 6th, Mack Deibel has joined the Chamber as the Communications Specialist. Having called Sandpoint home for many summers, he is happy to announce he is hanging his hat with us. This north Idaho local has spent the last 10 years traveling back and forth from here and Minnesota where he recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in Strategic Communications.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognized Pend Oreille Health Care and North Idaho Spine Clinic with a ribbon cutting to celebrate their new location at 1207 Michigan Street, Suites B & C in Sandpoint.

Pend Oreille Health Care offers a full functioning family health care clinic. They treat both acute and chronic health care problems, provide men and women’s wellness exams, and well child and baby exams. Board certified nurse practitioners, Jane Hoover and Michelle Anderson make up the team at Pend Oreille Health Care. Jane is a certified asthma educator and is able to diagnose and treat most breathing issues. Michelle has a background in acute care internal medicine and cardiology. Both place a great emphasis on education and prevention of illness in their practices and are able to write prescriptions and follow through on therapies.

Chamber Welcomes Affordable Housing Organizations to Sandpoint

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed the Bonner Community Housing Agency (BCHA) and Community Frameworks to the area with a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 16th. Sharing office space at 105 N. 2nd Ave. in Sandpoint, both BCHA and Community Frameworks work to bring affordable housing to Bonner and Boundary counties.

BCHA was established in 2007 and works directly with Idaho Housing and Finance (IHFA) to provide homebuyer education. Classes are held monthly through their “Finally Home” program. We are currently working directly with IHFA to provide a Community Land Trust to create affordable housing for families that make less than 80% of the area median income and keep these houses affordable for generations to come,” says BCHA administrator Chris Bassett. Stephen Drinkard is the President of the Board of Directors for BCHA.

Community Frameworks is a non-profit housing counseling provider and educator based out of Spokane, WA. They expanded their services into Northern Idaho in January, 2011 and share space with the Bonner Community Housing Agency. Community Frameworks has spent the last 15 years working one-on-one with homeowners to help them achieve a dream of homeownership. Their services are free to the public and include a credit and financial fitness evaluation. Through education and skill building assistance, Community Frameworks is able to assist with credit repair, budgeting, debt reduction, and ultimately attaining a mortgage.

“We plan to work with community members in Sandpoint and the surrounding area to help them stabilize their finances, provide the best possible education and assistance for their circumstance. We want to give them an opportunity to get ahead,” says Melody Kinkead of Community Frameworks.

Chamber Honors Panhandle Special Needs as the Non-profit of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes Panhandle Special Needs, Inc. (PSNI) as the Non-profit of the Month for their contributions in serving those with disabilities in Bonner and Boundary counties. PSNI is located at 1424 N. Boyer in Sandpoint and has been training individuals for over the past 27 years in life skills, in-house work, and community based employment.

PSNI currently assists over 90 individuals in the greater Sandpoint area. Providing employment services for people who want to work and need assistance in finding the right match for their skills and abilities, they offer a variety of employment services to help the individual and the employer in a successful partnership.

PSNI also operates “The Cottage,” a unique thrift store located next door to the PSNI workshop. They sell gently used household items and re-discovered treasures to the community. All proceeds go to PSNI who then invest in training and obtaining gainful employment for their clients with disabilities. As a two-fold blessing, the cottage also generates work opportunities for their various clients who help with janitorial, decorating and cashiering duties among others.

Chamber Honors White Cross Pharmacy as Business of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes White Cross Pharmacy and Compounding as the Business of the Month for demonstrating superior service to their customers and dedication to the community. With locations at 1319 Hwy 2 in Sandpoint and 5453 Hwy 2 in Priest River, the staff of White Cross Pharmacy go above and beyond to meet the needs of their customers.

Pharmacist Gary deBlaquiere purchased White Cross Pharmacy in 1977 and has been at the helm for the past 34 years. In 1996 Gary built their current Priest River location and in 2003 Shannon McGlashan joined Gary in opening the Sandpoint store. Gary’s son Dr. Richard de Blaquiere joined the business in 2004 after graduating WSU School of Pharmacy. In 2010, Governor Butch Otter appointed Dr. Richard de Blaquiere to the Idaho Board of Pharmacy. The board was organized in 1905 with the mission to promote, preserve and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public by and through the effective control and regulation of the practice of pharmacy. Dr. de Blaquiere is currently the Vice Chairman of the Board.

Just a few weeks ago Gary, Shannon and Richard moved the Sandpoint store into the old Dish restaurant location in the Mountain West Financial Center giving them improved visibility, better parking, additional floor space and the ability to add robotics. The new location gives the pharmacy room to grow and expand their services.

The team at White Cross Pharmacy and Compounding is always looking for unique ways to accommodate their customers. They not only have superior customer service, but have a commitment to customer satisfaction. They organize medications in a dispenser box or blister packs, provide free in-town delivery, have a drive thru window, and add flavors to children's medications or even pet medications.

As a compounding pharmacy, White Cross is able to customize medications to meet the specific needs of patients. Compounding is often used for patients who are unable to take medication orally or take a commercial product because of adverse reactions to its ingredients. Chamber Recognizes LPOSD Superintendent Dick Cvitanich as Volunteer of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize Dick Cvitanich, Superintendent for the Lake Pend Oreille School District as the Volunteer of the Month for his countless hours of dedication to the community and educational system.

Mr. Cvitanich is the Superintendent of Schools for the Lake Pend Oreille School District. He has been an educator for 33 years and superintendent for LPOSD since 2006. Besides being a tireless advocate for the schools, students and teachers, Mr Cvitanich has also volunteered what is left of his “free” time with many area organizations. Ever visible in the Sandpoint community, you will find Dick Cvitanich on the Bonner General Hospital Foundation Advisory Council and at various fundraisers and functions for the Rotary Club.

Mr. Cvitanich sits on the Board of Directors for Panhandle Alliance for Education where he helps with numerous fundraisers and grant awards. He has organized the CHaFE 150 bike ride in the past and this year you may even catch a glimpse of him riding in the event. The CHaFE 150 is a long-distance charity bicycle ride event in Idaho and Montana to raise money for early childhood education.

Committed to public education, Mr. Cvitanich is the leader of the Region 1 Superintendents & Idaho Superintendents network. Anyone that is willing to listen and schedule Mr. Cvitanich to speak, he is more than happy to explain the needs of the district and the funding situation. When there was work to be done on the school levy, he made approximately 36 presentations to the Board and community groups to show his support. To increase the visibility of the levy, Mr. Cvitanich even stood on street corners with a sign to promote the levy because he believes so passionately in public education.

Chamber has Ribbon Cutting for “Greasy Fingers Bikes n Repair”

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes “Greasy Fingers Bikes n Repair” to the Greater Sandpoint area. They provide a full service bike shop which includes the sale of new and used bicycles, parts, and accessories. They also offer professional bike repair and maintenance to keep bicycles in top condition for an afternoon ride on a North Idaho summer day.

Anderson intends to promote biking in the Sandpoint community and will offer mechanical support for local rides and events. He will also lead weekly rides and organize group rides throughout the summer giving area residents a chance to get out and enjoy the scenery of the surrounding area. Offering clinics to increase biker’s general and mechanical knowledge, Anderson strives to keep bicyclists safe and their equipment at optimum performance. “Our goal is to help you get the most out of your bike,” says Anderson, a 4th generation Sandpoint native. Brian holds several certifications and has completed formal bicycle training in all areas ranging from professional repair to Bicycle Fitting.

Anderson joined the Marines out of high school, traveled the world and then pursued a double major at UCLA. After moving back to Sandpoint where he missed the hiking, biking and snowboarding he grew up with, Anderson became involved with the Pend Oreille Pedalers. He was soon elected Treasurer and has served on the board ever since. As the club’s current President, the Pend Oreille Pedalers has blossomed into over 150 members. Anderson has graciously volunteered in events such as 24 Hours for Hank and ChaFe 150 and is passionate about promoting biking in the community.

Chamber Welcomes Air Idaho Charters with Ribbon Cutting

Chamber Awards Holiday Inn Express and Suites "Business of the Month"

Sandpoint – The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce congratulates The Holiday Inn Express and Suites as the Business of the Month for their generosity in the community. Stacey’s Country Kitchen Receives January Business of the Month Honor

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce congratulates Stacey’s Country Kitchen located at 469000 Highway 95 in Sagle as the January 2011 Business of the Month for their generosity in the community.

Although Stacey’s Country Kitchen has been in business for just over a year and a half, they have gone above and beyond expectations with providing good old-fashioned home cooking, exceptional service, and valuable community contributions. Owners Mike and Lisa Chronic have given of themselves far more than just tasty food. This past Thanksgiving and Christmas, they reached out to the community to provide free meals. On Veteran’s Day, they also provided a free breakfast, lunch or dinner to veterans to express appreciation for their sacrifices to this country. “We fed more people on Veteran’s Day than we have any day since opening,” Lisa stated.

Mike and Lisa would also like to thank the many individuals who gave generous donations to help offset the cost of preparing Thanksgiving meals. Carl and Diana Mays, David and Dorothy Watts, Mark and Corrine Jones are among the many who generously contributed to make this a great community effort. Customers of Stacey’s Kitchen also helped to fill approximately 150 gift tags for the tree of sharing which provided Christmas gifts to families who otherwise may not have had any.

Stacey’s Kitchen owes a lot of success to their tremendous staff. “I would like to give a huge thank you to our team here, without them we would surely fail. They are the best!” says Lisa.

Bizarre Bazzar Receives December Business of the Month Honor

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce congratulates Bizarre Bazaar located at 502Church St in Sandpoint as the December 2010 Business of the Month for their generosity in the community.

CAL's (Community Assistance League) Bizarre Bazaar opened its doors in March 2006 and was met with resounding success. Featuring brand name clothing, accessories, linens, kitchenware, crystal, china, decorative items, jewelry and more, Bizarre Bazaar is an upscale boutique with something for everyone. The objective of CAL's Bizarre Bazaar is to contribute profits from their shop directly back into the community via grants and scholarships. They continue to contribute financially to many local area schools, organizations, and services that enhance the quality of life of many Bonner County residents.

Since its inception 27 years ago CAL has contributed close to $600,000 to the community and over 30 grants totaling $52,000 were awarded in 2010 alone. Some of the recipients include, Sandpoint Parks & Recreation, Kinderhaven, Community Cancer Services, Panhandle Special Needs and the Bonner Humane Society.

Mandy Evans Named Chamber Top Volunteer for December

At the December 9th Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce Holiday Luncheon, Mandy Evans of Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters, received the Volunteer of the Month Award for her active involvement in the community.

Mandy dedicates hours of volunteer time to help promote the vitality of downtown Sandpoint and support its businesses. She is the Chair of the Marketing Committee for the Downtown Business Association as well as the Secretary. She helped secure a grant for $44,000 from SURA (Southeastern Universities Research Assoc) to promote downtown Sandpoint.

Mandy has a passion for animals, and started the Molly Inspires Foundation at her previous home in Santa Barbara. She has brought this passion to Sandpoint. She is a strong supporter of the Panhandle Animal Shelter, assisting with fundraising efforts. Mandy started the ‘Yappy Hour’ event, which has become a very successful and growing monthly fundraiser from April through October for the Shelter. She also started the ‘Santa Paws’ fundraising effort.

Mandy spearheaded the successful effort (after many had failed) to allow dogs on leash in some city parks. She worked with City Government to allow dogs on leash in Lakeview/Memorial Park and a new trail in Hickory Park. She is currently working with Chief Lockwood and the City to locate and build a Sandpoint Off-leash dog park.

Mandy assists Pawsitive Works in their marketing efforts. Pawsitive Works is a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to helping youth at risk through canine assisted activities with shelter dogs.

Through all of this, Mandy does a lot of the community outreach for Evans Brothers Coffee is a stay-at-home Mom for Trace (and soon to be another!)

Trinity at City Beach Receives Business of the Month Honor

Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille, next to Sandpoint's famous City Beach, Trinity at City Beach is Sandpoint's premier waterfront dining experience.

After vacationing with family members in Sandpoint for several years, Justin moved his family from Denver, CO in 2007 and shortly thereafter reopened Trinity at the new 56 Bridge St. location. Now in their 2nd year of operation, owner Justin Dick and wife Shaunavee stay busy serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. When not busy in the restaurant, Justin also manages to find time to give back to the community through various donations and fundraising activities.

Trinity at City Beach has generously donated food and their time to such events as CHaFE 150, Harvest Ball, Holly Eve and Panhandle Alliance for Education. They have contributed in fund raising events for Team Laughing Dog’s Race Across America battling autism, Yappy Hour for the Panhandle Animal Shelter, and Bonner County Community Food Bank.

“As a small business owner in Sandpoint, I feel obligated to help identify the needs of this growing, ever-changing community as well as create relationships with like-minded individuals. My employees share this same view and are eager to donate their time volunteering and organizing various community activities,” states Justin.

Trinity at City Beach is also the only restaurant in North Idaho to participate in the UNICEF Tap Project. The project born in New York City is based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.

The restaurant is also hosting Thanksgiving Dinner from 11:00am to 9:00PM. $2 from every entrée sold will be donated to the Bonner County Community Food Bank. Stop in to indulge in great food and participate in a great cause.

Daybreak Center Moves to New Location

The Daybreak Center moved their facility to 820 Main St. in Sandpoint and celebrated with a ribbon cutting sponsored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

Offering respite care for current caregivers, the Daybreak Center offers a safe, home-like, and nurturing environment for seniors suffering from the onset of dementia. Knowing their loved one is in good hands, the center provides caregivers with free time to run errands or take an afternoon off.

As a non-profit organization, Daybreak Center prides itself in providing family support through dementia therapy. Through community support and generous donations, the Daybreak Center is able to offer affordable and realistic rates. The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes Ponderay Garden Center as Business of the Month for their involvement and generosity in the community.

Now in their 3rd year and managed by Kevin Mansoor, the Ponderay Garden Center has seen rapid growth which has been achieved through establishing a relationship with the community and involvement in many of the local activities. Michael states, “We’re not just part of the community, but a participant in the community.”

They’ve hosted a number of events, such as barbecues and pancake breakfasts. They have also donated plants and trees to beautify the Long Bridge and enhance local events such as the Chamber’s own Health and Wellness Fair. Ponderay Garden’s most current project, and one they are deservedly proud of, is the $5000 “Free” Home Make-over that was given to a deserving local family.

The Ponderay Garden Center has also received national recognition by landing the feature story in the current issue of the Garden Chic magazine. “To be featured in Garden Chic is an incredible honor,” says Kevin.

Bonner County Fairgrounds Awarded August Business of the Month

Rodeos, events, 4H exhibits and judging competitions – it’s all happening at the fair! For these and many other contributions to the community, The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognizes the Bonner County Fairgrounds as the Business of the Month.

With the tireless efforts of Rhonda Livingstone, Fair Manager, and Robert “Bob” Snider, Head Groundskeeper, the Bonner County Fairgrounds provides a free educational opportunity for the residents of Bonner County to display ideas and articles from their areas of expertise as well as allowing local organizations and businesses an opportunity to present their products to the public.

Rhonda has been the Fair Manager for 10 years and volunteered her services for 7 years prior to becoming manager. Robert just recently oversaw the completion of their new RV Campgrounds this past May 2010. With 33 campsites, restroom facilities, showers, electric and water hookups and covered pavilion, the new campground provides comfortable RV stays whether camping or attending a horse show.

With the Bonner County Fair and Rodeo just around the corner, the new campground facilities will be well received. This year’s theme is “Fiesta at the Fair” and proves to be fun and educational for the entire family. From Tuesday, August 24 through Saturday, August 28 be sure to plan a day at the fair and see all there is to offer. There will be livestock exhibits, demolition derby, Horsin’ Around Expo and more.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s health and wellness committee in partnership with Bonner General Hospital and Association of Bonner County Employees announce the 3rd annual Community Health and Wellness Fair. The event will be held on Saturday, September 18th at the Bonner County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is an excellent opportunity to learn about the variety of health and wellness options available in northern Idaho at no or low cost, say event organizers. Free health screenings, product and service samplings, live demonstrations, and expert advice will be provided by area practitioners, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and other businesses offering health-related products and services. Participating exhibitors represent a full spectrum of the health industry including traditional and alternative medicine, recreation and fitness, insurance, skin care, mental wellness, financial fitness, and more.

“Individuals can learn about the multitude of health care options available in our area, and all ages will appreciate our family-friendly activities,” says Jodie Corless of Pend Oreille Insurance & Financial Services and chairman of the health and wellness committee. Once again, the Association of Bonner County Employees has arranged for free infant car seat checks made available through the City of Sandpoint Fire Department. Idaho State Police will provide beer goggle demonstrations and Bonner General Hospital will provide blood sugar screenings, a drawing for a free digital mammogram, and other activities currently in the works.

“Financial Fitness” tests will be provided by STCU, Pend Oreille Surgery Center will be available to answer questions about sports health, along with other services and activities for all ages. Aaging In-Home care will provide free blood pressure checks and in-home care assessments. Additionally, kids will enjoy climbing aboard the fire truck, ambulance, and marine patrol boat while meeting local firemen, police officers and emergency medical personnel. Kids can also participate in the bike “rodeo” and learn about bike safety techniques.

OB/Gyn information from Sandpoint Women’s Health, mini stress-relief acupuncture treatments from Green Mountain Medicine, free blood pressure and blood sugar checks from Luther Park @ Sandpoint, and information on safer products for the home environment from Melaleuca are among the free service offerings to be found at the Health & Wellness Fair. There will also be low cost and free medical care information from Bonner Partners in Care Clinic, online degree options from EWU, and outpatient surgery information from Pend Oreille Surgery Center.

McAlister Announced as Chamber President

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce officially announces and welcomes, Kate McAlister, to the chamber staff effective Aug 9, 2010. McAlister will serve as President and CEO and brings over 20 years of corporate program development and marketing experience to the team.

Kate received her Community Investment education from Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, Caroll School of Business and participated in an international leadership committee to develop standards for the Community Investment Program.

Prior to joining the chamber, Kate acquired valuable experience and education in her position as Corporate Community Investment Manager at Itron, Inc. in Spokane, WA. Over a span of 15 years she was instrumental in developing an award winning national…and later international…Community Investment program which included partnerships with local universities, non-profits and corporations.

Kate also took the initiative to establish and manage the Itron Employee Foundation. Only 30 such foundations exist in the United States today.

“After driving to Spokane for over 14 years, I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity in Sandpoint to come along and this is it!” says Kate. “I’m excited about my new position and can’t wait to get out into the community to begin meeting the business owners. Roxie Lowther Awarded Volunteer of the Month

At the July 8th Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce Power Luncheon, Roxie Lowther, Director of Marketing Media at Litehouse Foods, received the Volunteer of the Month Award for her active involvement in the community.

Roxie took the initiative by coordinating the food and equipment for the cooking contest during the Summer Sampler and was instrumental in the event’s huge success. She took responsibility for the “secret” ingredients and made sure the chefs had everything they needed for their pantry items. Roxie and her team provided the cook stoves and strategically placed mirrors so the audience could watch the chefs as they prepared their mouth-watering fare.

"The Chamber couldn't have put on this popular event if it weren't for Roxie and the Litehouse team," Kathy Hubbard, chairman of the board of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce said. "Roxie pulled rabbits out of the hat, and made it look easy. Her can-do attitude and great sense of humor makes her a pleasure to work with."

Roxie and her team were there from start to finish. They set everything up, tore everything down, tallied votes, and basically made it all happen!

Chamber Announces Departure of Bennett

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce officially announces the resignation of Marketing Director Heather Bennett, effective July 9, 2010. Bennett has been with the company for four years and will be moving on to another opportunity at the Greater Spokane Incorporated.

“I want to thank the Board of Directors, members, and staff for giving me the opportunity to work in this organization,” said Bennett. “I’ve worked with a top-notch team and alongside countless business leaders who give of their time and expertise to make the impossible possible.”

The weathermen predict sunny skies next week, so the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce determined to postpone the 5th annual Sandpoint Summer Sampler to Thursday, June 24th.

“We plan on the same place and time but with blue skies and sunny rays,” said chairman of the board Kathy Hubbard.

The Sandpoint Summer Sampler brings favorite Sandpoint restaurants, wineries and breweries to Farmin Park and Main Street in downtown Sandpoint to cook up samples of their cuisine, wines, and brews. From 5 to 7:30 pm, sample from over sixteen establishments.

To top off the evening, don’t miss the ever-popular Litehouse sponsored cooking competition. Local chefs will compete for the traveling trophy as they cook using a box of ingredients and their ingenuity. Competing this year is Eddie Sneva from DISH Home Cooking battling and Jason Clarke from The Bistro Inn at Sand Creek.

Annual Tourism Luncheon with CEO Tom Chasse

On Thursday, June 10th the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Tourism Luncheon sponsored by Horizon Credit Union. They invite Schweitzer Mountain Resort’s President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Chasse as the keynote speaker to discuss the importance of customer service.

Growing up in a skiing family, Chasse became a competitive ski racer, suffering a career ending injury in 1976 that opened the door for him to work in the ski industry as an instructor. He worked his way through the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) as a member of the Eastern Educational Staff/Examiner Team, and then gained a stronger focus on staff development and ski area management with the American Skiing Company, eventually leading to an appointment as President, Managing Director of Attitash.

Now as President and CEO of Schweitzer Mountain Resort, his objectives are to build a strong management team, believing staff development and recognition are key factors in the overall guest experience.

The luncheon will be held at Panhandle State Bank’s Community Room, located at 414 Church Street in downtown Sandpoint. The program begins at 11:30 am with networking and business tradeshow booths.

Founded by CEO Steve Russo in 2009, Loopah originated when Russo recognized a clear need for innovative fundraising methods after observations as a board member for nonprofit organizations. An online method to raise funds utilizing Positive Purpose Campaigns resulted.

The campaigns gain supporters for a cause through a safe donation platform on the organization’s website. For example, a sponsor may donate $1 for every hour of reading or $2 for every hour of volunteer work performed; and Loopah provides the platform where donations are collected, tasks tracked, and family and friends can connect in a safe online environment.

Additionally, through partnering with E-Bates, Loopah provides a Loopah Mall. Supporters enter the mall through their own website, where they have access to over 1,200 online retailers. Each purchase made through the Loopah Mall earns up to 26 percent cash back for the organization.

With the online platform, Loopah also builds user-friendly websites, and the first 100 nonprofit organization who sign-up will receive a free website.

Leadership Sandpoint Supports DayBreak Center

On Saturday, May 1 the Sandpoint Leadership Class of 2009 completed their class project, an assignment bestowed on every class to support a nonprofit. The class of 2009 chose the DayBreak Center, an organization sponsored by Sandpoint Area Seniors which provides respite care to family members of those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

In 2009 the class raised over $2000 with a yard sale and recently utilized the funds raised to install planter benches for their back patio, as well as provide them potting benches, a number of potting tools, and additional chairs for their backyard. The Leadership Sandpoint class provided these at the request of the center which will support their therapy to delay the progress of dementia.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce congratulates the class on their successful project and thanks the DayBreak Center for their continued efforts to provide a nurturing place for adults and respite time for caregivers.

Bird Museum Receives Business of the Month

A museum celebrating inventors and aviators, the Bird Aviation Museum & Invention Center received the May Business of the Month award by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Founded by Drs. Forrest and Pamela Bird, the 16,000 sq. foot museum educates visitors about the historic contributions of aviators and inventors who helped create modern technology and who forever changed the way of life. Since their grand opening in 2007, they’ve hosted multiple historical events, inviting well-known aviators and inventors to meet and greet the community of the Greater Sandpoint area. Their next event on July 17th will honor Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) who flew over 60 million miles during WW II.

The museum also hosts Camp Invention, scheduled for June 28 through July 2 of 2010. The camp is a weeklong summer enrichment program for children entering grades 1 through 6 and teaches life skills such as problem-solving and teamwork through hands-on fun.

From May 17 through October 8, 2010 the museum is open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 4 pm. Their café is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm and is available for private catering events.

Jim Zuberbuhler Receives Rookie of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce recognized Edward Jones Financial Advisor Jim Zuberbuhler with the Rookie of the Month Award for his involvement with the Chamber.

As the Chamber’s education chairman, Zuberbuhler became heavily involved with Bonner County Communiversity after meeting with Sandpoint High School’s Connie Kimble who came up with the idea. With a background in higher education, strategic planning, and passion for education, Jim became a key leader in forming the organization. He along with Connie Kimble and Karl Dye of Bonner County Economic Development Corporation became the steering committee; and they galvanized the support of a consortium of colleges and universities, financial institutions, businesses, and organizations to launch Communiversity.

“I can't sing Jim's praises enough,” said Kimble. “He jumped into the Communiversity project with his whole heart and mind, with passion, humor and an expertise that kept us focused and invigorated. He's been a first rate moderator, cheerleader, and idea man. The Bonner County Communiversity is a reality in large part due to the genuine care and commitment of Jim Zuberbuhler.”

The Bonner County Communiversity, a nonprofit organization serving to publicize the existing educational opportunities and launch new opportunies, is in the process of providing a Business Management Certificate in partnership with Lewis-Clark State College with classes beginning in the fall of 2010. According to Kimble, other classes are in the works and all are steered by instructors and community interests.

Chamber Yard Sale Supports Satellite Visitor Center

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce plans to open a summer Satellite Visitor Center in their former location at 1202 Highway 95. The location, in addition to the Visitor Center headquarters in the PSB Community Plaza, will provide information to visitors and those relocating to the area.

In order to gain support to operate the additional Visitor Center, the Chamber is selling sponsorships for businesses to gain added exposure, an optimum opportunity considering the high traffic volumes of 100 to 150 visitors per day.

The Chamber will also host a yard sale on Friday, May 21st from 9 am to 12 noon to raise funds to operate the center. With office and party supplies, brochure racks, filing racks and cabinets, vintage posters, books, and assortment of items, the community is welcome to find a “treasure” and in return support the business community of the Greater Sandpoint area.

Farms, forests and foods are the theme of the 44th annual Farm Tour presented by Idaho Forest Group on June 16th.

The tour provides an educational opportunity to discover the inner workings of local farms and forests with local experts. This year’s tour explores southern Bonner County with tours to BLM Lands and Garfield Bay with local Fire Safe project manager and long-time forester Don Gunter explaining the forests and fires, with a history on the fire of 1910. The tour then travels to the WaterLife Discovery Center, also known as the “fish hatchery,” to view this outdoor aquatic education center surrounded by forested wetlands and abundant in wildlife. Last on the itinerary, guests visit privately-owned elk and horse ranch Gabriel Creek Ranch to discover the business of raising elk, rabbits, chickens and goats for meat, dairy, soap, and eggs.

The event is hosted by the Chamber’s Ag & Forestry Committee each year to educate about the farming and forestry industries in the area. This is a family-friendly event, packed with information and activities for all ages.

“We are pleased with the momentum building for this annual Farm Tour with some new faces and new organization involvement,” said committee chairman Doug Lynch.

New this year the tour provides more sampling of locally grown foods and fair trade flare. 'Green' Celebration at After Hours

Despite the current economy, employers in the Inland Northwest are hiring. On Wednesday, April 28th at the Bonner Mall in Ponderay, businesses accept applications and some will perform on-site interviews at the 5th annual Career Fair sponsored by Litehouse and hosted by the Idaho Department of Labor and Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

“One of the most challenging obstacles in obtaining a job is ‘getting your foot in the door,’ and the Career Fair allows job seekers opportune face-to-face interaction with employers,” says Amy Little, president & CEO of the Chamber.

According to event organizers, current job openings from participating employers include a mix of part-time, full-time, and temporary occupations in health care, manufacturing, administration, services, education, and management.

“The jobs are changing daily as new positions open and existing ones are filled,” said Bridgette Bradshaw-Fleer of the Idaho Department of Labor. She suggests job seekers to take this opportunity to connect with employers regardless of the openings currently listed due to turnover.

Job seekers are also encouraged to prepare for the event by researching the participating employers, bringing plenty of resumes catered to the job/s sought, preparing a 20 to 30 second introduction to use with employers, and dressing appropriately to create a dynamic first-impression. Celebrating New Veterinary Service in Sagle

Fry Creek Animal Clinic celebrated their new business with the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors in March 2010 after opening in June 2009.

Located near Fry Creek at 470889 Highway 95 in Sagle, Fry Creek Animal Clinic is a full-service veterinary clinic south of the Long Bridge. They provide a wide variety of services to small animals including spays, neuters, other surgeries, dental work, and emergency services.

In addition to regular visits, they offer shot clinics the second and fourth Saturday each month between 12 and 1 pm and encourage pet owners to obtain vaccines. They have offered a community service project, a cat spay and neuter clinic, in hopes that the reduced cost program can benefit the public with the feral and stray cat population.

The Clinic is owned and operated by Dr. Marvelee Higgins DVM, and husband Jerry Higgins. They and their staff are pleased to provide professional and compassionate care to pets in Bonner County. Horizon Credit Union Honored Business of the Month

Horizon Credit Union, a member owned financial cooperative in Bonner County for over twenty years, received the Business of the Month award for March by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

In 1989 Horizon Credit Union began serving the Greater Sandpoint community on Superior Street, sharing one-half of a duplex for office space with a young family. “She was a great cook,” recalled VP Relationship Manager Steve Wilder. “Occasionally, she would sate our pangs with a sampling of what she would be serving her family that evening.”

He recounted, “Ever since our merger with Superior Federal Credit Union in 1989, the Sandpoint community responded very well to our attractive rates and service emphasized approach to banking. Relatively speaking, we are still a small financial institution here, but those early days were humble beginnings, for sure!”

Eventually Horizon Credit Union purchased an old service station site on Fifth Avenue and placed a single-wide mobile home onto that location to serve members. “Our members were patient and supportive as we grew enough in the next few years to be able to build the branch on the same site that sits here today,” Wilder said.

In 2003 Horizon Credit Union opened a second branch at Bonner Mall, and in 2007 opened the Bulldog Branch at the Sandpoint High School. The third branch offered an opportunity to teach students about finances and their financial future. The four student tellers act as ambassadors between the credit union and their peers. They receive a budget and have an active say in marketing, business development, financial empowerment, community outreach, and branch operations. Additionally, they provide their peers with financial education presentations.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce thanks Horizon Credit Union for their continued involvement to support area businesses and for providing financial education to train the next generation on monetary stewardship.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomes Sandpoint Women’s Health, a five-physician obstetric and gynecologic practice that has provided high-quality health care to the women of northern Idaho and beyond for over 25 years.

Their talented medical providers include: Bruce Honsinger, MD, Deborah Owen, MD, Margaret Bowden, MD, Camille Santarpio, DO, Kristin Algoe, MD, and Patty McLaughlin, CNP. Another valuable member of their team is their sonographer, Diana Contor, who provides on-site ultrasound services for their patients. Sandpoint Women’s Health provides patients from across the region with numerous services including well-women exams, menopause management, treatment of chronic pelvic pain, contraception and family planning, treatment of incontinence, provision of obstetrical care, and many more. Their physicians also perform in-office procedures, as well as hospital-based surgeries such as hysterectomies, endometrial ablations, and elective sterilizations, among others.

Bonner County Career Fair on April 28

The Idaho Department of Labor and Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce will host the fifth annual Career Fair on April 28 at the Bonner Mall in Ponderay from noon to 6 p.m.

“The Career Fair is especially important to promote economic development by matching job seekers with employers,” Bridgette Bradshaw-Fleer of the Idaho Department of Labor said. “Even in this tough economy, businesses have available to them a large pool of highly qualified and skilled workers.”

Organizers invite businesses and organizations from the northern Idaho region to participate. An early bird special runs until March 23 so businesses are encouraged to reserve their spaces now.

Joyce Baker Receives Rookie of the Month

Joyce Baker, manager of the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Ponderay, received the Rookie of the Month award at the Chamber’s February Power Lunch, an award honoring a new member who is actively involved in supporting the business community.

After opening the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in the summer of 2009, Joyce became an active member of the new group Sandpoint Area Lodging & Tourism (SALT) and holds a position on the Chamber’s Recreation & Tourism Council. She is actively engaged with the Visit Sandpoint branch of the Chamber and takes advantage of the co-op advertising opportunities available through the tourism grant.

Library District Receives Business of the Month

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce honored the East Bonner County Library District with the February Business of the Month award for their excellent resources and services to the area.

Founded in 1910, the East Bonner County Library celebrates 100 years with expansive programs and services today from their humble beginnings. With insightful and informative staff, they provide multiple resources including books, videos, CDs, DVDs, wi-fi, internet computers, and a variety of services to the community, even going above and beyond by obtaining resources for residents with no-cost services such as their Interlibrary loan program. For people living in the district who are homebound or unable to come to the library due to physical limitations or lack of transportation, they provide home delivery. With a full list of free programs, such as storytime for kids, computer classes, tutoring, notary services and more, they are constantly striving to provide resources to our east Bonner County communities.

This month the library expanded their hours at the Clark Fork Branch and are now open at 10 am daily. The Sandpoint Library is open September 1 through May 31 on Monday through Thursday at 10 am to 8 pm and on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. From June 1 to August 31, they open 10 am to 7pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 5 pm Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays and holidays.

Carol Warren Receives Volunteer of the Month

Carol Warren received the Volunteer of the Month award by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce at the February Power Lunch.

As a retired teacher in special education, Carol gives her time in multiple nonprofit organizations. Weekly she volunteers at the Bonner Community Food Center, stocking shelves and working wherever needed. She’s an active Sandpoint Rotarian, hosting over 17 exchange students through the Rotary Youth Exchange and volunteering at many Rotarian service projects. To add to an already extensive schedule of volunteering, she also has a full-time volunteer role as the Chamber’s Ambassador Chair, coordinating volunteers for both Chamber and community-wide events, performing ribbon cuttings for new businesses, meeting new member businesses, and representing member businesses on the Board of Directors.

“No matter what the occasion, Carol is always the first to volunteer. Most recently she volunteered on Saturday in our Visitor Center to promote businesses during the annual Mardi Gras celebration,” said the Chamber’s executive director Amy Little. “We are thankful for the amount of time she invests in our community to make it a better place to live and work.”

Chamber Hosts Workshop Series

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s Business Development committee is pleased to offer the 2010 TGIF Workshop Series presented by Bonner Business Center.

“TGIF workshops provide small business owners the tools to increase the likely-hood for long-term success, in addition to helping professionals expand their advancement and employment opportunities,” said committee chair Amy Whalen of Graphic Ink Creative Group. “Covering a variety of business topics, these workshops are designed to inspire entrepreneurship and further develop our community’s workforce.”

Launched in 2009 these 90-minute workshops provide instruction on niche topics of interest to businesses.

Over forty business professionals attended the first workshop in the 2010 series titled Make Time Work For You instructed by Jessica DeHaan of Express Employment Services. The committee welcomes back executive director of Life Skills Northwest and business consultant Linda Spagon to instruct the second workshop, Communication: Lessons from the Tower of ‘Babble’ on February 19th where Linda will answer question on how to connect the broken lines of communication.

Other upcoming workshops include Small Budget, Big Buzz: How to Promote Your Business without Breaking the Bank with Jennifer Leo of GraphiComm Inc., Dealing with Difficult Employees with Ruth Wimberly of Wimberly Human Resources Consulting, Conversations with Successful Entrepreneurs with Doug Hawkins of Litehouse, Paul Schaller of Quest Aircraft, and Doug Faude of Molehill Mountain Equipment, and Social Networking: Building a Network to Grow Your Business with Joe Davis of Coldwater Creek.

Chamber Celebrates with Stacey's Country Kitchen

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome new restaurant Stacey’s Country Kitchen, located at 469000 Highway 95, north of Sagle Road.

Owned by Mike and Lisa Chronic, Stacey’s Country Kitchen serves delicious home-style cooking, breading their own chicken strips and cooking homemade soups, hash browns, red potatoes and more. With great food at affordable prices, the community has embraced this Sagle restaurant since opening their doors with frequent families, church groups, and other individuals meeting frequenting for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant has become a new favorite birthday locale, and with a reasonably priced kids’ menu, families come to gather for many occasions.

For those who are on the go, Stacey’s Country Kitchen also allows customers to call ahead to order so they can have a hot meal ready when they arrive, or to take-out.

The owners have embraced the community and are excited to give back. Recently they hosted free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at no charge, and they were pleasantly surprised with the many volunteers, some of which they had to turn away because so many stepped forward to help.

Chamber Honors Sleep's Cabins as Business of the Month

Sleep’s Cabins, the historic vacation getaway treasure on Lake Pend Oreille, received the Business of the Month award by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce for the month of January. With cozy, unique themed and decorated cabins depicting the Northwest culture, a fire pit for families and friends to gather, and delicious homemade cookies packaged with warm hospitality, Sleep’s Cabins is a place like none other.

Owned by Brent and Tawnie Sleep, the historic cabins are a labor of love. Brent’s grandparents, William F. and Frances Hamilton Sleep, originally purchased the property in 1936 for $75 for each of the three 50 foot lakefront lots – a challenge during the years of the Great Depression. The vision was to build a restaurant and rental cabin resort with home-cooked meals. Grandma had her own idea which did not include slaving over a wood burning stove, but she grasped the idea of rental cabins. She invested her time planting beautiful flower gardens requiring the family to haul truckloads of dirt and build a lake-water irrigation system since she built them from a rock point.

Today the Sleeps continue to maintain their lakeside treasure and care for the people who come to visit as William and Frances once did. Travelers come from all over the world to make a temporary home away from home.

One guest wrote, “Once again we have experienced the stillness and solitude of this special place. It has been a welcome retreat from the busyness of our lives, one where we have been able to restore and replenish ourselves. We will return to our routines with a new appreciation for life and its many blessings. Thank you for all your effort and attention to detail that makes Sleep’s Cabins such a comforting place to stay.”

Bonner County Fairgrounds Celebrates Expansion

The Bonner County Fairgrounds, home to the Bonner County Fair and a plethora of events, is pleased to announce the expansion of their facilities. After receiving a $302,316 grant from the Idaho Parks & Recreation Department, they will build thirty-three campsites for RVs and trailers with ADA accessible bathrooms and showers in addition to a covered pavilion with a seating capacity of 36. The pavilion is at no cost to users but reservations are recommended, and sites will be $15 per night.

The grant was made possible through the support of cash match from Crane Construction, Northern Lights, Carter Country Farm & Feed, and the Bonner County Fair Foundation and the support of J.A. Sewell, City of Sandpoint, and Bonner County. The sites are scheduled for completion by the Lost in the 50s weekend in May and will be open until the end of October each year.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce congratulates the Fairgrounds and their Board of Directors on this successful addition and recognizes the significant contribution these sites will have to keep visitors here to shop, dine and recreate during peak visitor months.

Greater Sandpoint Chamber Begins New Year in New Locale

On January 4, 2010 the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce opened their new Visitor Center and headquarters at 231 N. Third Avenue in Sandpoint in the PSB Community Plaza, a property which will encompass a mix of nonprofit and for-profit businesses.

Initiated after years of infrastructure issues at the location on Highway 95 along Sand Creek, the Board of Directors decided to move due to the financial constraints to incur from most recent flooding in December 2008.

“The Board of Directors spent a lot of time strategizing the pros and cons of moving, and I feel we made the best decision,” said Chairman of the Board Kathy Hubbard. The new location at PSB Community Plaza provides a financial savings, closer proximity to businesses, a location for meetings with an upstairs conference room, financial relief from providing a public restroom, and opportunities to promote more businesses in the Greater Sandpoint area to downtown visitors.

Another significant benefit is the ability to interface with agencies and organizations such as the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association (DSBA) within the plaza. “We have worked diligently these last two years to work cooperatively with other organizations, and this move will only foster more cohesiveness in the years to come,” said executive director Amy Little.

The Board is also negotiating a satellite Visitor Center during the high traffic months from Memorial Day to Labor Day in or near the city of Ponderay. “The Board was very cognizant that the Visitor Center’s location would now be downtown Sandpoint and that many of our members are not. That is why we’ve decided to either find a location in Ponderay or re-open the former building during our peak tourist season,” Hubbard said.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center’s operating hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm during the winter months, and the center will open for extended hours during the summer. The general public is welcome to come visit the new center, and Chamber officials look forward to hosting a ribbon cutting and grand re-opening ceremony in February.

Scenic Half Committee Receives Honors

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors were pleased to honor the Scenic Half Committee with the Volunteers of the Month award for their energy and commitment to organize the inaugural Scenic Half Race presented by Panhandle State Bank – a half marathon, 10K, 5K race, and kids’ fun run.

It was a core group of business professionals who volunteered to organize the event - director Dennis Dye, co-director Kevin Estes from Coldwater Creek, volunteer coordinator Allen McClelland from Washington Trust Bank, medical coordinator Michelle Anderson with Pend Oreille Health Care, and Judy Thompson.

We planned for 300 to 500 runners early in the planning stages, said co-director Kevin Estes.

Exceeding their goals, the committee had over 600 runners thanks to the support of forty-five sponsoring businesses and the thoughtful promotional efforts of the committee. Due to the high number of runners, they needed more resources to ensure this first event was a success and coordinated over 200 volunteers.

The races drew people from outside the area to lodge, dine, and shop; and in addition to supporting the local economy, they raised $2000 for the Bonner Community Food Center to support local families.

“The Scenic Half Committee gave much of their time and resources to organize this first annual event,” said the Chamber’s executive director Amy Little. “It is this type of passion, dedication, and commitment that make this community a great place to live and work.”

Sandpoint Lions Club Receives Honors

“They are truly the ‘elves’ working behind the scenes responsible for the purchasing, wrapping, and distribution of all the gifts and food boxes that are donated to help make Christmas a little brighter for the less fortunate in our community,” said Chamber Ambassador Andrea Marcih from Horizon Credit Union when presenting the Business of the Month award to the Sandpoint Lions Club at the Chamber’s monthly Power Luncheon.

As a “working club” with the motto “We Serve,” the club is part of Lions Clubs International, an organization with over 1.29 million members worldwide. The club meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7 pm at the “Lions Den,” located at 609 South Ella Avenue, to plan their many services and events.

Known for their Toys for Tots Drive, especially during the Christmas season, this is one of many services the Sandpoint Lions Club provides to support the Greater Sandpoint community. They display and maintain US flags at participating business locations and during holidays, collect used eye glasses and hearing aids to refurbish and make available, and provide college scholarships for Sandpoint High School graduates.

Additionally, the club organizes the annual Easter Egg hunt and 4th of July Parade, two major community events for both locals and visitors.

“They are appreciated for their support and dedication to the Sandpoint community and the many worthwhile causes they provide; therefore, the time is right to honor them, and December seems to be the perfect month to do so given their extra efforts put forth during one of the busiest times of year,” Marich added.

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is pleased to honor the Sandpoint Lions Club and encourages the community to participate this season in the annual Toys for Tots Drive to support local families. New and unwrapped toys can be donated at drop boxes at a number of businesses around town.

Chamber Offers Value During 2009 Membership Drive

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is holding a membership drive through the month of November. New and existing members alike can benefit from these limited-time offers.

“We recognize that times are tough out there and we want to do what we can to help our members,” says Amy Little, executive director. “We thought it was important to add value and at the same time find ways to reward our members for their participation in the business community.”

The Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit 501c6 organization with 550 existing members. The Chamber promotes, support and develops the business community of the Greater Sandpoint area.

New members who join before November 30th receive a number of great benefits, including having their initiation fee of $25 waived. In addition, there are free advertising opportunities exclusive to new members valuing over $260.

New members will also be guaranteed a listing in the Chamber’s new and improved business directory. New this year over 7,000 copies will be printed, with approximately 6,500 copies inserted in the Bonner County Daily Bee. Chamber membership levels range from $100 for non-profits to $455 for businesses with 21 to 30 employees, with additional investment levels with added exposure for those with 31 or more.

Current Chamber members also have an opportunity to save money and earn credits on their next annual dues statements. Any current members who sign up a new member are eligible for a $25 credit towards their next annual dues statement for each new member they sign up. The Scenic Half Raises $2000 for Local Food Center

The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce’s Scenic Half committee was pleased to present a $2,000 check to the Bonner Community Food Center as part of the proceeds from the inaugural race. The Scenic Half, a half marathon, 10k, and 5k race, was held on September 20, 2009.
“We are pleased to be able to give these funds to support individuals and families of Bonner County,” said executive director Amy Little.

Since 1980, the Bonner Community Food Center has served families in the area by providing a “helping hand” in a time of emergency. They are a primary food resource for low income families, individuals with disabilities, children and seniors. All their resources are free and supported by donations and grants. In January 2009 the center was honored as Nonprofit of the Year at the Chamber Choice Awards.

The Chamber and its board of directors would like to thank presenting sponsor Panhandle State Bank and the many sponsors, runners, and volunteers who supported the race with their time and resources. A special thanks also goes to the Scenic Half Committee led by Dennis Dye and Coldwater Creek’s Kevin Estes who contributed countless volunteer hours in planning this event.

2010 Economic Outlook Forum on Nov. 12th

The 2010 Economic Outlook Forum presented by Mountain West Bank brings regional experts together to provide an insightful and informative look into the economy of Bonner County on Thursday, November 12th.

Keynote speaker Fred Dickson will give a picture of 2009 and outlook for 2010. A longtime equity market strategist with a reputation for solid analysis and balanced, commonsensical commentary, Dickson is Senior Vice President and Chief Market Strategist for D.A. Davidson and began his investment career in 1973 as part of Goldman Sachs’ top-ranked investment strategy team before serving as an institutional portfolio manager and chief investment officer with several money management firms.

Other notable speakers include Regional Economist Katheryn Tacke who will give a labor market outlook and will specifically address health care, one of the largest employment sectors in Bonner County.

Experts representing banking, manufacturing, and tourism will address their specific industries. President of Mountain West Bank Russ Porter will discuss the banking industry explaining the bailouts, currency, and other pertinent information for businesses and consumer spending. To discuss the manufacturing base of Bonner County and projections is CEO of Pneumex John Kupice. Examining the tourism industry which represents a major segment of the labor pool in the hospitality industry is Amy Little, Executive Director of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and manager of the allotted $109,300 Idaho Travel Council grant fund.
